Dan Beard at Silver Bay

Dan Beard (1850-1941) founded the Sons of Daniel Boone, a.k.a. the Boy Pioneers of America, in 1905, and merged his organization with the Boy Scouts of America when it was founded in 1910. The first national camp was held at Silver Bay in August of 1910, and Beard is shown here demonstrating the proper way to throw a hatchet. What I love about this photo is the man in the center, reaching into his pocket but at the same time keeping an eye on the ax and leaning back to give this old man some room to move.
