Growing Up Wild

Growing Up Wild is the childhood memoir of Dorothy Watts Goodfellow (1905-2004), who grew up at her family’s home between Hague and Silver Bay; she mentions the Silver Bay post office and the Silver Bay School. It’s a great read, full of stories about the lake, the boats, the woods, the plants and animals, the seasons, and the characters who passed through them. Born in Silver Bay, Goodfellow studied at SUNY Albany and Harvard, taught at Carnegie-Mellon, but never lost touch with her roots; she served as president of Silver Bay’s Lake George Property Owners Association from 1978 to 1980. She died in 2004, at the age of 98; a sister and a niece survived her, both residents of Silver Bay.
