Conference pin commemorating the 59th Lutheran Summer Conference in 1990 and a class taught by the designer, Pastor Frederick J. Schumacher, who that year spoke on “Icons of the Eastern Church.” The medal shows Martin Luther holding an icon of the “Holy Theotokos” (Mother of God), Mary, with child Jesus in her arms and a quote from Martin Luther: “The arts in the service of Him who gave and created them.” Once again, Martin Luther’s coat-of-arms appears.
Our thanks to Pastor Schumacher for sharing these images and their stories. He signs his e-mails with this quote, and it seems right to include it here:
“This life is not righteousness, but growth in righteousness; Not health, but healing; Not being but becoming; Not rest but exercise; We are not yet what we shall be, but we are growing toward it. The process is not yet finished, but it is going on. This is not the end, but it is the road. All does not yet gleam in glory, but all is being purified.” — Martin Luther, Weimar Edition, 7:337
